IT firms blacked out in Soho

Hundreds of new media and IT companies are being affected by continuing power interruptions in the Soho area of central London.

EDF Energy says power network problems are the cause of the outages, which started yesterday.

Soho is home to a high number of new media companies as well as a number of IT companies. The outages have also affected the high concentration of electronics resellers in Tottenham Court Road.

EDF said the network problems were compounded by the ongoing hot weather, which had put additional demand on the network as a result of air conditioning being turned up by businesses.

EDF said it was attempting to rectify the network faults today, but said it could not guarantee that there would not be further outages as it did so.

Last night, Soho businesses lost power for 1.5 hours after earlier outages in the day.

EDF said another 1.5 hours outage may be necessary tonight as it completed repair work.
