Microsoft has confirmed that hackers broke into part of its French website Microsoft.com.fr and has threatened legal action against those responsible.

The attack saw a graffiti-style message pasted up on the Microsoft site. A mirror of the defaced site provided by web security site Zone H shows the banner headline “Hacked!”  followed by the message: “Hi Master (: Your System 0wned By Turkish Hackers!

redLine ownz y0u! Special Thanx And Gretz RudeBoy |SacRedSeer| The_Bekir And All Turkish HacKers”.

The hackers added: “next target: microsoft.com”, a dateline showing the time of the attack and a final blast: “WE WERE HERE....”

A Microsoft spokesperson said it had taken “appropriate action to resolve the issue and stop any additional criminal activity”.  The software giant was working with a third party hosting company to restore the website as soon as possible.

The spokesperson added, “Our initial investigation points to a mis-configuration of a web server at a third party hosting facility as the most likely cause of the compromise.”

Microsoft was cooperating with law enforcement agebncies “to investigate and take appropriate legal action against those responsible”, he said.
