IBM has gained ground on HP and Dell in the server market, showing above average growth in the first quarter.

Figures from analyst Gartner said the firm saw server unit shipments grow by 19.3% during the quarter - growth well ahead of market leaders HP and Dell.

Overall server shipments grew by 13.7% compared to last year’s first quarter, said Gartner, but actual sales values were flat. The fourth quarter saw shipments up 12.7% and sales up 4.5%.

The low-end server market, based on Intel and AMD x86 chips, is continuing to prop up the overall market, said the analyst. Shipments of Unix-based servers fell 0.9%, and sales slumped 5.1%, said Gartner.

HP is the market leader by number of shipments. HP’s shipments grew 8%, but it lost 1.4% of market share. Dell's shipments grew 7.1%, and it lost 1.3% of market share.
