Microsoft buys asset tracking firm

Microsoft has bought software asset tracking firm AssetMetrix to enable users to track non-Microsoft applications using Microsoft’s existing tools, such as Systems Management Server 2003.

AssetMetrix has a software library of more than 100,000 identified software titles, and can produce 200 different reports for asset and licence managers.

Microsoft said it intended to release the software library, along with application signatures and additional reports, to existing SMS customers at no charge before the end of the calendar year.
