The computer services and finance industries pay the highest average salaries to IT professionals, according to the latest Kew Associates benchmarking study.

The average salary for IT staff in computer services was about £50,000 and in finance it was £39,000. The transport and communication industries followed with an average salary of £38,100.

The lowest-paying sectors were education, with an average salary of £27,800, health care (£30,900) and construction (£31,000).

The research found that average salaries varied depending on the size of the employer. Companies with between 1,000 and 2,000 employees paid an average salary of £39,500, compared with £30,900 for companies employing between 50 and 99 staff.

As organisations increased in size, the ratio of IT staff to non-IT staff grew, rising from an 0.6% for companies with fewer than 50 staff to 1.2% for firms with between 55 and 1,000 staff, and 3.8% for businesses with more than 5,000 employees.

The proportion of IT staff in an organisation was greatest in IT services (20%), followed by banking and finance (7.7%). Health care had the lowest ratio of IT staff to non-IT staff at 0.7%.
