BEA acquires RFID specialist

BEA Systems has acquired radio frequency identification (RFID) middleware solutions company ConnecTerra for an undisclosed sum.

ConnecTerra’s solutions will allow BEA to offer infrastructure products to its customers that can easily integrate RFID data into their applications and processes.

ConnecTerra has 25 existing customers for its technology and plays a leading role in worldwide RFID standards bodies. This may prove useful for BEA as the RFID market starts to develop.

Alfred Chuang, BEA chief executive, said, “Most of the early RFID adopters are already using BEA and ConnecTerra technologies, and this gives us the industry’s first end-to-end standards-based infrastructure for RFID – from the capture of raw RFID events to the translation of those events into relevant business data.”

According to analyst AMR Research, 69% of companies are planning, evaluating, piloting or implementing RFID this year.

BEA announced the $200m (£118m) acquisition of portal solutions company Plumtree Software in August.
