Another virulent Sober worm sweeps the net

Antony Savvas

A new version of the two-year-old Sober worm is spreading over the internet.

The latest version – called Sober.o, Sober.q, Sober.r or Sober.s, depending on which security software companies you use for protection – was at its most virulent yesterday.

Like previous versions of the two-year-old Sober, the worm comes in English and German and spreads itself by hijacking the e-mail address books of infected PCs, using its own SMTP engine.

The latest Sober worm is probably the most potentially damaging threat since the appearance of the Zober worm in August.
