Alacris purchase strengthens Microsoft's ID management hand

Antony Savvas

Microsoft is enhancing its identity management solutions with the acquisition of Alacris, a supplier of certificate management and identity assurance software products.

Alacris’s solutions are an alternative to the traditional username- and password-based security systems used to access corporate equipment and data.

The company's flagship product is the idNexus Identity Assurance Management System, which is aimed at helping companies that use security technologies such as smartcards and public key infrastructure encryption to deploy them in a user-friendly way.

The Windows-based system can streamline the issue of new smartcards and the configuration of existing smartcards. The technology also provides a web-based workflow management system that lets users manage their smartcards.

The acquisition price of Alacris has not been disclosed.
