Cisco Systems has unveiled plans to integrate RFID (radio frequency identification) capabilities in its switches and routers.

The solution is designed to allow companies to integrate RFID solutions more easily into their supply chains and track the tagging information over their networks. Cisco is offering RFID services through its integrator partners.

Called the Application-Oriented Network (AON) for RFID, the Cisco RFID offering is a module which embeds RFID middleware functions into the company's Catalyst 6500 enterprise datacentre switches and 2800/3800 ISR branch-office routers.

The technology can provide RFID data capture and filtering, plus data authentication and aggregation. Cisco AON for RFID costs from £9,600.
