Microsoft reveals name of next-generation Windows

Antony Savvas

Windows has today officially named the next version of its Windows client operating system as Windows Vista.

The operating system, the next major version of Windows since the launch of Windows XP, was previously codenamed Longhorn.

Microsoft also announced that Windows Vista beta version 1 will be available to developers and IT professionals by 3 August.

Windows Vista will be more tightly integrated with Microsoft’s developing business software solutions, including web services, and offer improved security features.

Widespread commercial availability of Windows Vista is expected next year.
