Microsoft has launched the first public beta of BizTalk Server 2006, the next version of its business processing and web services software.

The full version of BizTalk Server 2006 isn’t expected to ship until the end of next March, but many of the new functions will be contained in the beta edition.

These include business activity monitoring alerts that enable business users to keep track of key performance metrics. Users can set up alerts in the form of e-mails, instant messages or other forms of communication.

The beta also allows users to test the "seamless migration" from BizTalk Server 2004 to version 2006 promised by Microsoft.
