Buoyant sales drive up PC forecasts

Analyst IDC has raised its forecast for PC sales this year as a result of a more buoyant market than expected.

IDC now predicts that total PC shipments will grow worldwide by 11.4%  in 2005, to 199.2 million units, and forecasts a 9% rise to 217 million units in 2006.

The analyst’s March report predicted worldwide growth of 9.7% for 2005 and 8.6% in 2006.

IDC said all markets had shown a greater overall improvement in the first quarter of the year, and that total shipments had been helped by greater than expected sales in smaller volume markets such as Latin America , Africa and the Middle East .

Big increases in shipments of consumer laptops in particular had driven Western European market growth, said IDC.
