IT turns professional with skills initiative launch

An IT skills initiative hellbent on improving the professional mettle of the industry and putting a business shine on IT skills has been launched.

Prof IT aims to establish industry-wide standards and working practices and to create an accreditation framework that applies equally to junior IT staff and senior managers.

It’s the brainchild of the UK’s skills bodies The British Computer Society (BCS), e-skills UK , Intellect and the National Computing Centre (NCC).

This autumn, Intellect will publish guidelines to help companies set up, demonstrate and assess IT professionalism.

Jack Higgins, Intellect director general, says that despite the contribution of ICT industries, “These industries and the people they employ are often perceived as lacking professionalism and up to now there has been no benchmark for IT professionalism in organisations.”
