Mellanox virtualises servers for desktops

Business and technical computing interconnects firm Mellanox Technologies has unveiled connected blade servers dynamically provisioned into scalable, service-centric pools of computing resources and virtualised for corporate desktop deployments.

The InfiniBand range is designed to provide optimal total cost of ownership and features include virtualised I/O modules that are said to provide agility, flexibility and  consolidation benefits. The products are based on single-chip, 20Gbps adapter silicon in order to facilitate dense, space-saving systems. The technology, says the company, provides an intelligent IT architecture that drives the deployment of virtualised desktops, with users controlling the scaling of connected processing blades and the number of I/O connections that are used to integrate into existing infrastructure.

Mellanox says that InfiniBand's high-bandwidth and low-latency characteristics are used to interconnect compute blades to virtualised I/O modules. As a result, the company claims, resources can scale independently from I/O resources used for networking, storage and graphics and can be dynamically reconfigured to meet changing requirements.
