One-fifth of SMBs have already experienced a security breach, according to a survey of 505 small businesses by government website www.businesslink.gov.uk.
The survey reveals that 20% of small companies do not feel very confident about their understanding of IT security, while 17% don’t have a security policy in place at all.
Viruses are the biggest threats, according to 59% of the businesses, in spite of widespread use of anti-virus tools.
The annual Department of Trade and Industry/PriceWaterhouseCoopers annual security survey finds that 98% of companies use anti-virus software, yet 35% still report infections.
The report also identifies that companies are getting better at patching. Almost 9 out of 10 UK companies update their systems within one week of a patch being issued.
