Siemens IT staff ensure election coverage runs smoothly

IT professionals from Siemens Business Services were busy behind the scenes at the BBC last week to ensure the broadcaster's election coverage went smoothly.

The services partner, which signed a 10-year, £2bn IT outsourcing deal with the BBC last October, provided six staff for round-the-clock support for the BBC's election studio, which included 200 computers and 3km of cable.

Siemens staff started planning for election night last summer and staged a mock-up rehearsal in January. They also helped build a cut-down, but fully operational studio elsewhere in London to enable continuity if the BBC studios were evacuated.
