Web apps deliver speed to high flyers

Akamai Technologies has introduced its Web Application Accelerator for speeding up access to web-based enterprise applications.

The managed service is designed to support customer-facing portals, collaboration platforms, e-learning environments, and business-to-business commerce.

Alternative solutions to optimising web application performance, such as those that are appliance-based, require businesses to implement and maintain hardware.

The Akamai Web Application Accelerator service uses a network of global servers and requires a single network DNS change by the customer.

The service makes sure enough bandwidth is available to the most important applications designated by the customer.

"Quality of application performance equals quality of business service," said Dana Gardner, an analyst at Yankee Group.

"With its latest offering, Akamai is focusing on a comprehensive approach to application acceleration for enterprises, where simplicity and cost-effectiveness for quality assurance solutions are more important than ever," she said.

Cathay Pacific Airways and the US Air Force are beta users of the service.
