Antony Savvas

Pharmaceuticals and chemicals giant Akzo Nobel has hired IT services company Wipro Technologies in a multimillion-pound deal to implement a global distributed IT environment.

Wipro will help Akzo Nobel Chemicals implement a shared IT environment by providing infrastructure management services for distributed datacentres across multiple locations in Europe and the US.

Akzo will also use Wipro’s global delivery platform and quality of service procedures to maintain and enhance a wide range of applications, including SAP business software.

“Wipro was chosen for its ability to understand our idea of a shared IT environment and design a solution which would provide us with the best returns," said Gerard Helmink, Akzo Nobel Chemicals chief information officer.

Akzo Nobel, headquartered in the Netherlands, employs 64,500 people in more than 80 countries.
