Firefox is favourite in user search for alternative browser

Website developers will have to make sure their sites are optimised for more than Internet Explorer user browsers, if the growth in visitors to the Firefox browser download page is anything to go by.

Nielsen/NetRatings, the internet ratings agency, said the FireFox browser download site (www.mozilla.org/products/firefox) has seen unique US visitor numbers jump 237% since last June.

“The search for an alternative browser has grown in recent years, as the internet's early adopters have begun to think of the browser as something other than a commodity,” said Ken Cassar, director of strategic analytics, Nielsen//NetRatings.

“FireFox gives web surfers a simple tool that blocks unsolicited windows, is less susceptible to virus attacks and offers a unique means of navigating multiple sites within a single browser," he said.

In its latest research, Nielsen//NetRatings says the top 10 US internet brands (by parent company) in order are Microsoft, Time Warner, Yahoo!, Google, United States Government, eBay, InterActiveCorp, Amazon, RealNetworks and Walt Disney.

The top 10 US internet advertisers in order are LowerMyBills.com, Netflix, Vonage, Dell, Ameritrade Holding Corporation, Monster Worldwide, SBC Communications, Viacom, InterActiveCorp, and United Online.
