EMC speeds access to enterprise archives

EMC has launched a software product that allows users to more effectively search, retrieve and use enterprise archives.

The new EMC Centera Seek and EMC Centera Chargeback Reporter products enable the advanced search and retrieval of fixed content across multiple terabytes of stored data.

This makes utility-based reporting and billing possible, whereby different cost centres can be charged for the amount of data they access or the amount of processing time they take up on an enterprise’s data storage systems.

EMC Centera Seek provides an advanced search capability using metadata (data about stored data) for faster, more precise searching and retrieval of information stored on EMC Centera platforms.

The result is higher-performance custom searches allowing customers to quickly search and retrieve the exact content they seek across the entire archive, even as those archives continue to expand and more users access the data, said EMC.

William Hurley, an analyst at Enterprise Strategy Group, said, "This new software addresses some key customer requirements - the ability to thoroughly and rapidly search archives, and the ability to determine who is using the archive for cross-charging.”
