Yahoo has launched a test version of a desktop search engine.

The Yahoo Desktop Search client will rival similar developments from Google, Ask Jeeves and Microsoft. It is designed to be more intuitive and faster than desktop search facilities that reside within the Windows platform.

Yahoo’s product is based on the X1 search software licensed from developer Idealab, with Yahoo being able to deliver sponsored ads every time a user operates the search engine.
