Accelerators speed up branch office traffic

Antony Savvas
Companies wanting to boost the throughput of their branch office data should consider using a data acceleration system as well as data compression, bench tests have indicated.

Tests by research firm Tolly Group focused on the application traffic management space for linking branch offices over a wide area network, and brought together products from suppliers Expand Networks, Packeteer and Peribit.

The tests were commissioned by Expand, which wanted to show how its data acceleration algorithm performed against rival products.

Tolly benchmarked Expand's Accelerator 4800 Series device over Packeteer Packetshaper and Peribit Sequence Reducer data compression systems.

Tolly subjected all three devices to a series of file transfer tests. The tests showed that the Expand system, equipped with data acceleration, improved file transfer times by up to five times.

Kevin Tolly, chief executive of Tolly Group, said, "The Expand Accelerator 4820 outperformed the competition, demonstrating that the device enables users to maximise their Wan connections efficiently."
