The trust's health informatics training service provides training to mental health and primary care staff, service users and carers in the Wakefield area. A service manager and five staff are responsible for providing training in desktop software and clinical information systems.
Vicky Harris, health informatics training manager at South West Yorkshire Mental Health Trust, said, "It is really important to us that we keep improving the quality of the training service and that we gain recognition for all the hard work that the team does."
As part of its efforts to emphasise the quality of the training it provides, the informatics training service put all its trainers through the Institute of IT Training's trainer assessment programme. This culminated in the service becoming the first NHS team to be awarded gold accreditation status.
Harris said, "The Institute of IT Training has helped us to focus on specific areas for improvement and has given the trainers individual accreditation for their training competency."
In order to achieve the gold standard accreditation, all trainers in an organisation must hold a valid, Institute of IT Training-recognised certificate in training practice.
The Institute of IT Training describes itself as the world's first professional body for training IT professionals. More than three-quarters of the UK's IT training is given by suppliers accredited by the institute.
