The Chinese government has blocked Chinese Internet users from using AltaVista's search engine, less than a week after it blocked the Google search engine.

The Chinese government keeps close control over the sites that China's 45 million Internet users can access and often blocks foreign news sites, but this is the first time it has blocked search engines.

However, Yahoo! is still available to Chinese users. Yahoo! recently signed an agreement with the Chinese government on what it information it would make available through its search engine.
