HP sticks with Quantum but drops StorageTek

Hewlett-Packard has picked storage vendor Quantum Corp. as the supplier for its high-end automated tape libraries, ending its relationship with Storage Technology (StorageTek).

HP has extended a long-standing relationship between Compaq and Quantum across the now-combined enterprise storage line of HP and Compaq, said Adrian Jones, vice-president of worldwide OEM (original equipment manufacturer) sales in Quantum's storage solutions group.

Quantum's ATL P-series libraries will be sold under HP's StorageWorks ESL9000 family of products.

HP will phase out gear from StorageTek over the next three to six months but will provide additional drives for these products until the end of 2003 if needed, a spokeswoman said.

While HP will sell most of the Quantum products to existing customers, Jones said the company expects "a sizeable amount" of revenue to come from customers switching from StorageTek.

Quantum has also announced that IBM will ship the Quantum SuperLoader rack-mount tape loader with its Intel-based servers.
