Sun Microsystems is stepping up its Web services strategy with an instant messaging service for business users.

Sun Microsystems is stepping up its Web services strategy with an instant messaging service for business users.

The Instant Collaboration Pack aims to provide companies with secure instant messaging and collaboration. It is an add-on module for Sun's iPlanet portal Server, offering instant messaging, alerts and news feeds. The module will also feature peer-to-peer computing, allowing users to share files across the Net.

Sun also unveiled a Web services starter kit, aimed at developers and IT managers. The kit offers technical information on how to build Web services, including white papers and tutorials. It comes bundled with Web services development software.

The software bundle includes: iPlanet Directory Server, for managing users of Web services; Forte Tools; iPlanet Application Server J2EE Reference Edition; J2ME, for developing software components; iPlanet Portal; and Web and messaging servers for deploying and delivering web services.
