Local MP Brian Sedgemore has called for Government intervention to sort out the ongoing housing benefits crisis in Hackney, East London.

Claire Forrest, marketing director of ITNet, said a major part of blame for the problems in Hackney must lie with the Government's new anti-fraud legislation.

"Complying with it has proved to be a Herculean task for both Hackney council and ITNet," she explained.

Forrest said, "We have made significant progress at Hackney since December, doubling the speed of output while still achieving compliance." However, she admitted that tenants would not immediately benefit.

"We recognise that the full impact of this will take some time before it filters through to everyone entitled to benefit and are acutely aware of the problems this causes for the community," she said.
