Huge Microsoft data centre planned for Virginia
Microsoft has confirmed its plans to build a new data centre in Mecklenburg County, Virginia. The vendor has said it will spend up to $499 million to open the new facility. In a press release from the Virginia governor's office, the plant was touted as "the largest economic investment in Southern Virginia history."
Dell backs off clearing the path for HP to buy 3PAR
Dell has declined to match HP's latest offer for storage vendor 3PAR, ending the bidding war that has spanned 18 days. HP's offer stands at $33 per share, whereas Dell's final offer was $32 a share. In a statement, Dave Johnson, senior vice president for corporate strategy at Dell, said: "We took a measured approach throughout the process and have decided to end these discussions." Dell claims to be entitled to a $72 million termination fee.
HP Enterprise Services launches virtualised storage service
HP Enterprise Services has introduced virtualised storage service (VSS), which the company claims can save up to 30% in costs through moving appropriate data to less expensive storage tiers. The VSS uses thin provisioning to tap into unused storage space within a network, before creating a pool that each storage instance can use.
