Virgin Media Business unveils regional co-location datacentres for UK business

Virgin Media Business has launched a co-location service in partnership with datacentre operator ICM to offer regional datacentres around the UK.

Virgin Media Business has launched a co-location service in partnership with datacentre operator ICM to offer regional datacentres around the UK.

The datacentres will be in Glasgow, Leeds, Birmingham, Farnborough, London, Manchester, Romford and Bristol.

Using the company's nationwide fibre-optic network, Virgin Media Business says it will provide customers with a 99.95% availability guarantee and high-speed access to their data.

To deliver 99.95% availability guarantee, all of the datacentres have pre-built diverse power feeds, on-site generators and service level agreements with energy suppliers. Virgin Media Business says these measures allow it to maintain a constant reliable stream of power to customers' racks.

Andrew Gibson, senior product manager, applications and services at Virgin Media Business, believes businesses will use co-location as the first step into a full-blown cloud computing strategy, to gain trust in the supplier. "Many customers are starting to realise the benefits of moving their IT infrastructure off-site, but they are afraid of losing control and would like to maintain control. Co-location allows them to retain this control," said Gibson.
