The Ministry of Defence lost 47 USB sticks and 57 computers and laptops in 2010.

Andrew Robathan, minister for defence personnel, said the MoD takes any loss of information and associated media storage devices very seriously and has robust procedures in place to mitigate against such occurrences.

"New processes, instructions and technological aids are also being implemented to mitigate human errors and raise the awareness of every individual in the department," he said in a parliamentary written statement.

During the same period three USB sticks and 85 computers and laptops were also stolen.

The MoD has said it intends to ramp up cyber security and is undergoing a public consultation on ways it can prevent "future threats".
