Mozilla has released a Firefox 4 beta to improve browser start-up times, bookmarking and complex animations.

Other features include application tabs and Mozilla's Panorama to aid web navigation. Firefox Sync integrates bookmarks, open tabs and passwords across computers and smartphones into the browser.

"With full support for HTML5 features in Firefox 4 beta, developers can create new ways for people to enjoy the web. This includes WebM and HD video, 3D graphic rendering with WebGL, hardware acceleration and the Mozilla Audio API to help create visual experiences for sound," said Mozilla in a blog post.

Firefox recently outstripped Internet Explorer (IE) as the number one browser in Europe, according to analytics company StatCounter.

Firefox took 38.1% of European market share in December, compared with IE's 37.5%, the research found.
