The manufacturing sector is creating dedicated CIO roles as technology becomes integral to growth strategies, claims a report from Capgemini.

The manufacturing industry is increasingly turning to collaborative business models due to tight margins, it added.

The study also found that more companies are looking externally for help, with 50% looking to outsource their IT functions.

Udo Lange, director at Capgemini, said, "Business innovation and collaboration should now be fully integrated parts of any corporate strategy, and it's good to see increased support for innovation at an executive level."

Of the 189 participants surveyed across 15 countries, most said they were effectively carrying out a range of supplier collaboration activities, including the use of information systems (89%), open-innovation environments (80%) and involvement in the innovation process (79%).
