More than half of SMEs plan to increase IT spending over the next year, compared with 2010, according to research from Orange.
Communications equipment was singled out as the main technology needed to support SMEs' business. Social media, business applications and mobile WiFi were also listed as essential business tools.
Of the 2,181 small businesses surveyed by Orange, 74% said they are considering working options in 2011, citing staff efficiency as the main driver.
Andrea D'Ercole, managing director of ItalyAbroad.com, says he has waited for a more positive business climate before investing in the company's website.
"Next year we are investing £50,000 in a redesign, which will incorporate social media tools. At the beginning of the year everyone was talking about the recession, but now we've got through that and business is on the up we're ready to make an investment," he said.
