Salesforce.com introduces free Chatter for enterprises

Enterprise cloud computing firm Salesforce.com has introduced a free version of its Chatter social collaboration tool for businesses using Salesforce.com services.

Chatter is an enterprise collaboration application and platform. Similar to social networking sites Facebook and Twitter, Chatter includes features such as employee profiles, status updates, file sharing and real-time feeds.

Salesforce Chatter is now available free to all those paying user licences for Salesforce CRM and Force.com to allow businesses to deploy Chatter to employees enterprise-wide.

At Dreamforce, Salesforce.com's annual conference in San Francisco, CEO Marc Benioff said the company had the idea of Chatter two years ago. "This is a brand-new product and the price is free. The whole company can now be on Chatter. That's pretty exciting."

Benioff added that administrators can automatically provide employees with Chatter through the administration settings.

Companies such as Dell have rolled out Chatter enterprise-wide with more than 100,000 users.

Chatter is available as a mobile application for Apple's iPhone and iPad as well as Blackberry devices, while Chatter Mobile for Google's Android operating system will be available early next year.
