Dell takes on iPad with seven-inch tablet

Warwick Ashford

Dell is to launch a seven-inch tablet computer in the next few weeks and a 10-inch tablet in six to12 months.

Amit Midha, Dell greater China president, told the Wall Street Journal there will be a slew of new small form factor products in the next year.

Confirmation of the new tablets from Dell comes a day after Research In Motion (RIM) unveiled its seven-inch Blackberry Playbook tablet in San Francisco.

Dell, which already sells a five-inch tablet, is the latest in a rapidly growing number of computer makers to announce smaller-than-laptop devices in the five months since Apple launched its iPad.

Midha said the seven-inch tablet will run Google's Android operating system, but some of the new products will also run Microsoft's Windows operating system.

Dell is still considering whether to use Google's Chrome operating system on its products, he said.
