VMworld: Colt offers vCloud hybrid datacentres for UK and Europe

IT managed services provider Colt will be the first company to offer VMware's hybrid service to UK and European businesses.

The service, which is part of its enterprise cloud offering, will deliver cloud flexibility and scalability, enabling organisations to manage their VMware virtualised environment, with the ability to scale on demand using Colt's managed service capabilities, Colt said.

The company will provide a VMware-certified cloud based on VMware vCloud Datacenter service, using its wholly-owned network, datacentres and managed services.

Paul Maritz, president and CEO, VMware, said at the company's annual VMworld conference in San Francisco, "The new service based on VMware vCloud Datacenter enables enterprises to not only improve efficiency internally, but also be in a position to tap into external resources in a non-disruptive way when it makes business sense to do so."

The Colt enterprise cloud will be available on a controlled basis from November 2010 and across Europe inn the first quarter 2011.

Hybrid clouds promise to bridge the gap between traditional datacentre computing and cloud computing. Disaster recovery and business continuity are among the areas of IT that could easily benefit from being moved into the cloud.
