Novell is offering its SuSE Linux Enterprise Server as a cloud service on Amazon's Elastic Compute (EC2) cloud services.
Charged at an hourly rate, SuSE Enterprise Linux will be supported on Amazon EC2. Novell said users will be able to purchase maintenance subscriptions for enterprise Linux instances directly on Amazon EC2 without first signing a separate licence agreement.
The announcement is part of Novell's SuSE Cloud Programme, which builds on Novell's intelligent workload management strategy. This is aimed at helping enterprise users to run a common Linux platform across the physical and virtual environments behind their firewall, and then use pay-for-use Linux in the cloud.
Markus Rex, senior vice-president and general manager of Open Platform Solutions at Novell, said, "Through the SuSE Cloud Programme, Novell is offering cloud providers a versatile Linux platform, complete with certified Linux applications and a robust solution for building cloud-based workloads in SuSE Studio."
