National and international government will be the fastest growing sector of global IT spending in 2010, according to Gartner.
The analyst firm's study of IT spending by vertical market said national and international government IT spending will grow 4%, compared to 2.9% across all other industry markets. Worldwide enterprise IT investment across all industries will reach $2.4tn in 2010 - although Gartner said growth would be slower than its previous forecast of 4.1%.

"We are advising our technology provider clients to prepare business plans for 2011 on the basis of our most-likely scenario for enterprise IT spending growth - 3.5%. However, they should act now to develop contingencies to mitigate the risk of zero growth in 2011, a scenario that carries a lower probability but a much higher potential impact," said Gartner research director Kenneth Brant.
"The bottom line is that technology providers need to be prepared for the worst case, where commercial IT markets stagnate and governments transition to fiscal austerity programmes," he added.
Gartner also recommends technology and service providers target high-growth industry segments over the next four years.
