Smartphone sales boost Carphone Warehouse revenue

Carphone Warehouse has benefited from a surge in smartphones sales. The devices helped lift revenue at the retailer's European stores by 3.7%, according to its latest quarterly results for the period to 3 July.

The group jointly owns the company with US partner Best Buy and has seen a rise in sales due to the launch of Best Buy megastores.

"In our stores across Europe, we are benefiting from the increasing penetration and usage of smartphones and the cascading of smart features into phones at all price points," said Carphone Warehouse CEO Roger Taylor,

"In the US, Best Buy Mobile is continuing its rapid growth, and we remain confident about its strong long-term prospects."

Worldwide smartphone sales increased by 49% to 54.3 million units in the first quarter of 2010, according to research company Gartner.
