IBM has announced an agreement to acquire database security and monitoring firm, Guardium.

The company said the acquisition is aimed at strengthening IBM's position in database security.

Massachusetts-based Guardium makes software tools to manage access to databases and to automate regulatory compliance.

IBM plans to integrate these tools into its Information Management Software and its Business Analytics and Optimisation Consulting platform.

The firm said the product combination will offer end-users a comprehensive way of protecting critical enterprise information and preventing fraud without complexity.
