IBM has got behind the Wimax long-range wireless data access standard by joining the Wimax Forum.
The Forum is an industry-led organisation driving the global adoption of standards-based, interoperable Wimax products for the delivery of broadband mobile internet services.
Don Lopes, vice president for IBM Global Services in the telecommunications industry, said, "Our membership reaffirms IBM's commitment to helping our service provider community deliver anytime, anywhere, converged communications. We want to continue to support Wimax as it evolves and becomes more established in the marketplace."
Wimax has only seen a low take-up among service providers. Only Pipex in the UK has launched trial services so far - in Milton Keynes and the Warwick area.
Intel recently rubber-stamped a commercial chip-set platform to support Wimax , and is a leading backer of the Wimax Forum.
