Nokia is expected tocut another
220 jobsas part of further plans to reduce research and
development activities in Japan, bringing the total worldwide
R&D job cuts to 550.
In March, Nokia announced plans to
lay off 1,700 staff worldwide in its Devices and Markets units,
as well as head office and global support functions, to save costs
in reaction to slowing global sales.
The latest cuts will affect only Nokia's R&D departments and
will not affect the Japanese operation of Nokia Siemens Networks or
Vertu, Nokia's line of hand-crafted mobile phones for the luxury
market.
The announcement comes just a week after Nokia said it is to
reduce
its R&D activities in Finland and Denmark, affecting up to
230 jobs in Finland and 100 in Denmark.
Last month, it announced the restructuring of its leadership
team after it reported a net loss of $1.4bn for the third quarter
2009. Revenue was down 20% at $14.6bn.
