A handbook is being published for CIOs in central and local
government with a range of regulations on green IT practices.
The handbook will be published in January and will contain
information and regulations on nearly every area of IT, including
mobile phone use, printers and a code of conduct for
datacentres.
The targets may be updated next September, after the current
proposals have been reviewed.
Catalina McGregor, the deputy green ICT champion at the Cabinet
Office, said CIOs across government are keen to adopt greener
practices.
"Both the central government and the local government CIO
councils have agreed to take this up and deliver it," she said.
The government has implemented a range of initiatives recently
in an attempt to reduce the carbon footprint of its huge IT
estate.
McGregor is also working on stopping criminals exporting huge
amounts of
IT waste to developing countries, where it is causing
environmental and health problems.
