Google’s Chrome operating system project could
be available for download within a week.
The operating system, first announced in July, is open-source,
light weight and will first be targeted at netbooks.
It could pose the first real competition to Microsoft’s
monopoly. Google Docs has already challenged Microsoft Office and
Chrome could cause more problems for the IT giant.
TechCrunch reported that Chrome OS could be available
imminently, after Google itself said it would “open source its
code” late this year. Netbooks running on Chrome will be available
to consumers in the second half of 2010.
Google said of its new operating system, “the operating systems
that browsers run on were designed in an era where there was no
web. [The Google Chrome Operating System is] our attempt to
re-think what operating systems should be.
“We hear a lot from our users and their message is clear —
computers need to get better.”
