Figures showing a rise in IT vacancies in the third quarter of 2009.

The latest REC and KPMG report shows increases for all IT staff, but especially temporary workers. The research also found a shortage of software developers.

The survey uses ratios to show whether demand for jobs in a particular sector has grown or shrunk. A number under 50 shows a contraction in demand compared to the previous month, while a number over 50 shows growth.

Permanent jobs in IT showed growth, with a ratio of 51.3. Temporary jobs performed even better, with a ratio of 53.8. Last year the rations were 40.4 and 42.8.

The numbers tally with other recent research on the IT job market. The latest SSL/Computer Weekly salary survey also showed demand is starting to pick up in some areas, with particular strength in the software developer market.
