UK trust in online retailers to protectpersonal datais even lower
thantrust in the public sector, research
has revealed.
The banking sector scored the highest confidence rating, while
online retail was the lowest. The survey polled 1,000 UK adults and
was conducted by market research institute Emnid.
On a scale of one to six, with six being the lowest confidence,
banks scored an average of three, compared with 3.7 for online
retail.
Traditional retail, telecoms, transport and the public sector
fell between the two extremes.
The low level of trust is probably related to the
many high profile data breaches in recent months, said Chi-Chi
Liang of Symantec's data loss prevention division.
"Businesses and the public sector have some way to go to
convince the public that personal data is safe in their hands,"
Chi-Chi Liang said.
