Bolton Wanderers FC has moved its web security into the cloud with software-as-a-service provider Scansafe to eliminate maintenance and software updates.

"We were looking to move to a SaaS solution to save both time and money," said Dave Atkinson, IT director at Bolton Wanderers FC.

The decision to move the football club's web security for office and mobile workers into the cloud came after realising the benefits of the SaaS model with e-mail security, he said.

Being a SaaS system means it requires no hardware, upfront capital costs or maintenance, which frees up internal IT resources to focus on core projects, said Atkinson.

One of the main reasons for choosing Scansafe, he said, was the ability to deploy the system quickly, its ease of use and its ability to trace and enforce security policies on all IT users.

"We have found that our web performance has improved now that the protection is happening in the cloud and away from our network," he said.

According to Atkinson, the business is benefitting from increased productivity, reduced bandwidth consumption and a lower total cost of ownership than traditional systems.
