Unilever has cut the cost of managing its storage area network
after deploying storage area network storage optimisation
tools.
The consumer goods manufacturer is using the Virtual
Instruments' NetWisdom tool to help it improve the speed and
performance of its SAN which spans 5 petabytes of data
globally.
An independent benchmarking exercise found that the IT costs of
Unilever's SAN after rolling out NetWisdom was millions of euros
less, than other consumer good manufacturers, the company said.
NetWisdom
helps storage managers by diagnosing where application performance
issues are caused by poor SAN performance.
Mike Royle, Enterprise Services Director, said that NetWisdom
gives Unilever greater insight into performance issues on the SAN,
which helps the team determine when Unilever needs to upgrade its
SAN infrastructure.
"Managing a SAN of any size can be highly problematic as it is
often impossible to tell where the hot spots and bottlenecks are
until you have trouble with tickets being raised for performance
issues. When you scale this up to a company of Unilever's size and
breadth you're presented with multiple business divisions across
multiple geographies where downtime could cost thousands, if not
millions, of euros - this is unacceptable,"
