BT Wholesale yesterday said it planned to almost double its
copper-based 24Mbps broadband footprint to 20 million homes and
businesses by spring 2011. It will also cut access charges to
resellers to help them push the technology, it said.
BT Wholesale's current broadband service provides up to 8Mbps to
99% of UK homes. About 40% of UK homes and businesses can get
higher speeds. The intended bigger footprint will boost broadband
availability to 55% by spring 2010 and to around 75%, depending on
customer demand, by spring 2011, BT said.
MD of BT Wholesale products Cameron Rejali said he planned to
cut wholesale connection prices to internet service providers from
January 2010 by almost 50%.
They will drop from £79.34 to £40.00 per Mbps per month. Rentals
standardise at £5.88 (excluding VAT) per line per month across the
enlarged footprint, a cut from £7.66 in some areas.
