The principle of net neutrality was confirmed by Federal
Communications Commission (FCC) chairman Julius Genachowski
yesterday in an effort to preserve the free and open
internet.
Speaking yesterday to the Brookings Institution, a think-tank,
Genachowski said he would stop internet service providers (ISPs)
from discriminating against particular internet content or
applications, while allowing for reasonable network management.
He would also ensure that ISPs were transparent about the
network management practices they use.
These two principles add to four others embraced earlier by the
FCC . They say that consumers must be able to access the lawful
internet content, applications, and services of their choice, and
attach non-harmful devices to the network.
"The internet is an extraordinary platform for innovation, job
creation, investment, and opportunity," said Genachowski. "It has
unleashed the potential of entrepreneurs and enabled the launch and
growth of small businesses across America. It is vital that we
safeguard the free and open internet."
